Scansion Revision

Please review these common metrical feet before class on September 20th. We will be rewriting one of Donne's sonnets using different meters.

Iamb: An iamb consists of two syllables; an unstressed syllable (short) followed by a stressed syllable (long).

Troche: A troche consists of two syllables; a stressed syllable (long) followed by an unstressed syllable (short).

Pyrrhic: A pyrric consists of two syllables; both are unstressed (short).

Anapest: An anapest consists of three syllables; two unstressed (short) syllables followed by a stressed (long) syllable.

Dactyl: A dactyl consists of three syllables; one stressed (long) syllable followed by two unstressed syllables (short).

Spondee: A spondee consists of two stressed (long) syllables.
